Our History

The Gloucester Community Foundation (GCF) was established in 2000 to preserve and enhance the quality of life in Gloucester, Virginia, through philanthropy and volunteerism. The GCF provides a mechanism for charitable donations to work here in our local community. We are governed by a local advisory board which oversees the allocation of funds to local non-profit agencies with the most clearly defined needs, and the ones with the ability to best impact the lives of Gloucester residents.

The GCF was established as a regional affiliate of The Community Foundation serving Richmond and Central Virginia. The association with The Community Foundation gives us the tools and resources we need to manage our endowment funds efficiently. Our local chapter operates independently with regard to grant decision and funds allocation as well as fundraising.

The Gloucester Community Foundation offers various vehicles for donors, including donor-advised funds and field of interest funds. The GCF Board has also established and continues to build the Gloucester Community Endowment Fund which makes grants to local nonprofit organizations. In addition, the GCF will occasionally initiate projects or forums to benefit the community. For example, the temporary, emergency Safety-Net Fund was established to provide help to people in Gloucester with housing, food, health-care and employment or other emergency needs during the recent economic downturn.
