Gloucester Community Foundation
Distributes $41,500 to Local Charities
The Gloucester Community Foundation awarded $41,500 in 2011 grant monies to 18 charities serving people in Gloucester during a reception Tuesday, October 25 at the Inn at Warner Hall.
This year’s recipients, listed below with a brief summary of the work the grant monies will support, will bring services to the community that range from pharmaceuticals and dental work to historical preservation to food and home support.
• Gloucester-Mathews Free Clinic: pharmacy support and medication
• Dental Clinic: support given through the Gloucester-Mathews Free Clinic for the 2012 Mission of Mercy dental event
• Bay Aging: provide non-perishable meals for seniors
• Volunteer Center of VA Peninsula: training, travel and materials for the Home Safety For Seniors program
• Alzheimer’s Association: respite care for three caregivers
• Samaritan Group: support for low income-working poor of Gloucester
• Literacy Volunteers: support to the jail tutoring program, specifically to bring a GED examiner and materials to inmates upon completion of their studies
• Boys & Girls Club of Gloucester: scholarships for 20 children for the after school program
• Laurel Shelter: support for a registered nurse on site to help the medically uninsured residents
• Gloucester Housing Partnership: home repairs and upgrades
• Gloucester Point Library: furniture and supplies for the recently opened library
• Rural Infant Services Program: support for 40 children (materials, equipment, etc.)
• Gloucester Rowing Association: operating expenses
• Fairfield Foundation: Edgehill station stabilization
• Ware Academy: scholarships
• Dream Catchers: horseback riding therapy program for special needs children
• Park Partners: support to Woodville Park
• Leukemia & Lymphoma Society: patient financial aid for travel and medical expenses
The Gloucester Community Foundation is a public charity established in 2000 to preserve and enhance the quality of life in Gloucester through philanthropy. The Foundation aims to facilitate and serve the philanthropic interests of its donors and meet the on-going needs of non-profit agencies serving the Gloucester Community.
The Foundation established the Community Endowment Fund which is supported by local citizens and businesses. It also manages a wide range of private funds established by individuals, families, corporations, and other foundations.
These recent grants awarded were part of the annual Endowment Fund grant cycle, bolstered by a matching grant and generous donations from the 2011 Business Partners. The 2011 Business Partners included: the Earl and Waverly Charitable Fund, the Inn at Warner Hall, EVB, BB&T, SunTrust, Riverside Health System Foundation, Phillips Energy, Timberneck Farm, JCB Transport, Martin, Ingles & Ingles, Chesapeake Marine Training Institute, Auto Max, Coastal Design, Direct Access Internal Medicine, Haley Real Estate, Hogg Funeral Home, North River Inn, Nuttal’s Store – Ware Neck, PHA, Revere Gas, Richland Farms, Spencer Realty of Virginia, and Virginia Country Real Estate.
In addition to being a Business Partner, the Inn at Warner Hall also donated use of the Inn, food, drinks and service for the reception.
