Mr. Frank Sanders had a vision of care for seniors resulting in the establishment of the Francis N. Sanders Nursing Home in 1962 in Gloucester, Virginia. Over the years, Sanders grew from a 59 bed nursing home to a continuing care retirement community. In 1984, Sanders’ Common, LTD opened with 12 apartments for independent living and the Assisted Living Facility welcomed 25 additional residents in 1999.

In 2003, the Sanders Board of Directors determined that to meet the ever growing needs of seniors, Riverside Healthcare Association, Inc. was better equipped to meet the complexities of operating Sanders Continuing Care Community. After the transfer, the Board established the Sanders Foundation Fund through the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond.

The Sanders Foundation Fund continues Mr. Sanders’ vision with a special interest in assisting programs and projects that address the needs and care of seniors in Gloucester, Mathews and Virginia’s Middle Peninsula. It also from time to time considers other worthy community projects. While grants are not limited, most are $5,000 or less with increased funding consideration for special projects.
