Eldridge Cook: A Catalyst for Character

Eldridge Cook is a delightful example of overcoming the odds. The grandson of former slaves, he grew up in the segregated South with limited opportunities. After his mother’s death, he was raised by his grandparents in Gloucester. That’s where he purchased the first freight truck in Gloucester County to transport fresh seafood and later started Cook’s Seafood Company – a leading seafood supplier in Hampton Roads for six decades. Despite his many accomplishments, Eldridge always remained modest and let his actions speak for themselves. He worked hard because he knew no other way and he gave back because he believed it was the right thing to do. Read more
